The Badge FairyTuesday 17th November 2020
Brownie Leader Lynda Letton, a.k.a. The Badge Fairy, has received a Growing Guiding Award (and badge) in recognition of her efforts to make Guiding fun.
Lynda, who is a Unit Leader with 134th A Craiglockhart Brownies was nominated for this award by a brownie parent, also a Guider, who recognised all Lynda's additional effort, hard work and enthusiasm for Guiding, particularly since lockdown in March.
At the start of lockdown Lynda, like many of our rainbow, brownie and guide units here in Edinburgh set up weekly zoom meetings for her Brownies. Lynda made sure all the new girls in her brownie unit felt welcome, she has carried out socially distanced garden enrolments, safely delivered craft bags, encouraged the girls to work on badges and offers catch-up sessions for any of her brownies who miss the weekly zoom meetings.
When her brownies complete their badges, Lynda sends a card with the badge and signs it from “The Badge Fairy”. The brownies love this and if the badge is delivered by Lynda to their doorstep fairy dust will surround the badge.
Lynda’s fellow leaders report that their brownie Zoom meetings have been great fun thanks to Lynda - with guest celebrities such as local radio presenter Boogie from Forth One’s Boogie in the Morning show and tennis legend Judy Murray. They have even had an airline pilot who was asked by one of the brownies how many times he had crashed Fellow leader Audrey Gow said “Lynda is a fantastic host on zoom – our Halloween Zoom party was certainly a night to remember with dooking for apples, craft, spooky soap making, seeing how far you can stretch a Curly Wurly and of course snack time! Lynda also encouraged everyone to wear Halloween themed fancy dress.”
Lynda is always planning the next event for the girls, be it a Christmas Zoom Sleepover or a trip to the cinema. Lynda also gave up her time to attend a Rainbow Zoom sleepover where she led them in singing some campfire songs – which is no mean feat leading singing on Zoom!
Her enthusiasm and commitment is admirable and has made a difference in the local community. This award is well deserved and Lynda, our very own badge fairy was delighted to receive her very own special badge
Lynda received her Growing Guiding Award and badge at her unit’s weekly Zoom meeting. Unbeknown to Lynda all of her brownies, fellow leaders and some specially invited guests arrived early to the Zoom meeting room and then admitted Lynda to the meeting. When Lynda arrived she was surprised to see so many ‘visitors’ in the meeting and was even more surprised when she heard the good news. In fact The Badge Fairy was speechless – well almost speechless!
