Spectacular Campfire

To mark the end of the Senior Section’s centenary year Girlguiding Edinburgh organised a spectacular campfire for our Guides and Senior Section members. Beth, aged 10, shared her experience with us:

“In Brownies I was really disappointed because we never got real fires. The only time I ever got a fire, it was a fake one when I went on a camp. It was set up inside with paper and torches so it looked like a real fire. I had great fun at camp but I couldn’t wait for a camp with a real fire!

I joined Guides recently and when I got invited to a real camp fire at Bonaly, I was delighted!! When the Friday came I was extra excited. At about 7:00pm we set off. When I arrived my friends gave me a really nice welcome. Lots of my friends go to a different Guides so it was great to all be together at this campfire. We were all given a goodie bag. Me and my friends were so excited about them.

We then walked along the grassy patch towards the camp fire. When we arrived the fire was already burning, it was extremely smokey and hot. Before long the fire really got going and was roaring with big flames. We started off singing lots of songs. We carried this on for half an hour then we had a break.

After the break we went back to the fire and made delicious s’mores then we carried on singing for the rest of the evening until it was time to go home at about 10 o’clock. We got to bring back our goodie bag which was a great thing. My first real camp fire was everything I wanted it to be. My Mum said I didn’t stop talking about it the whole way home. I can’t wait for the next one.”

Fellow Guide Lollie also enjoyed the campfire. She told us: “I loved demonstrating the song Bungalow, it was so cool!”

Girls take what they do in guiding with them as they grow up. Everything from working in a team, to taking the lead, to speaking out on issues they care about. It helps them develop the skills and confidence to become the young women they want to be. ’
