Spectacular Social Action by Edinburgh Guides

In January, 198B Edinburgh Guides collected over 150 toiletry items to donate to The Rock Trust, a local charity supporting young homeless people across Edinburgh. Items such as shampoo, body wash, toothbrushes and razors were donated to the charity by the Guides as part of their Hidden Edinburgh Challenge badge (a challenge badge released to celebrate the centenary of guiding’s Senior Section). The challenge badge awards points for raising £100 for a local charity but these Guides took their social action one step further by collecting toiletries for the homeless.

Unit Leader, Jennifer Walker said: “The girls were keen to support a local charity and this was a great way for them to get their friends and families involved in helping the local community. The girls were very aware that the toiletries would be gifted to young people in need, not that much older than they are, and I think this helped them to understand the significance of what they were doing.”

Lollie, aged 11, said “as a Guide and as a Rainbow Helper, it is really important that I am able to encourage others to support local charities such as The Rock Trust. I am currently working towards my Community Action badge and I feel is it my responsibility to create awareness of some of the issues that our community regularly faces.”

The Rock Trust have a variety of ways in which people can get involved in supporting the charity, more details can be found on their website at http://www.rocktrust.org/donate/.

Girls take what they do in guiding with them as they grow up. Everything from working in a team, to taking the lead, to speaking out on issues they care about. It helps them develop the skills and confidence to become the young women they want to be. ’
