Volunteer week: Lynne and Nicola

Date: 6th Jun 2025 Author: Rebecca

This Volunteer Week, we’re shining a light on some of our amazing volunteers and why they do what they do!

What roles do you have with Girlguiding Edinburgh?

We volunteer with the 180th City of Edinburgh Brownies, based in Portobello.

How long have you been volunteering with Girlguiding?

We received our 20-year service award last year and have stayed with our Pack since we were Brownies! We were asked to help out by our original Brownie Leader when we were in Guides and have never left.

What is a favourite memory you have from volunteering with Girlguiding Edinburgh?

All of the different experiences that we wouldn’t normally do – sleepovers at Blair Drummond in Yurts, sleeping in the tunnel at Deep Sea World and a sleepover at Jump In, to name a few. Along with weekends away at Vogrie, Netherurd, Stanemuir and Alison Cargill. Going to Switzerland, Austria and France with Guides and all the adventures that come with those trips – white water rafting, archery, gorge walking etc. All the Friendships – Our little Brownie leader team is the best and our Guiding Friendship Group outwith Brownies is amazing – a group of very different ladies of all different ages and experiences!

Why do you volunteer?

We volunteer to hopefully give girls the same amazing opportunities that we have had in Guiding. It’s always amazing to see what girls can achieve and the excitement when they do things they don’t think that they can! The friendships and experiences have been fantastic over the years.

Why should others get involved in volunteering with Girlguiding Edinburgh?

We need more volunteers to give as many girls as possible opportunities to do things they wouldn’t normally do and to grow to be the amazing women we know they can be – the sky’s the limit, as they say!

Girls take what they do in guiding with them as they grow up. Everything from working in a team, to taking the lead, to speaking out on issues they care about. It helps them develop the skills and confidence to become the young women they want to be. ’
