Robin – Leader in training

I am currently a Leader in Training and have been since November 2025. Before that, I was a Unit Helper for around a year, which gave me a great introduction to volunteering in Guiding and helped build my confidence working with girls and supporting activities. Moving into the Leader in Training role has allowed me to take on more responsibility, develop new skills, and become more involved in planning and delivering unit meetings.

Volunteering is a wonderful way to connect with your local community, meet new people, and develop your skills. I also find it incredibly rewarding to give something back and contribute positively to other people’s lives.

I started volunteering with Girlguiding Edinburgh as child development and wellbeing is a cause that is very close to my heart.

I was a Brownie and a Guide myself when I was younger, and I have many fond memories of my experiences with Guiding. I wanted to help create the same kind of supportive and encouraging environment for girls in our unit today.

Some of my favourite memories are the small moments when you start to see girls grow in confidence – whether that’s someone starting to come out of their shell, trying something new for the first time, or building new friendships. It’s rewarding to watch girls support each other and develop in themselves over time.

Volunteering with Girlguiding Edinburgh connects you to a huge global network while also helping you build connections within your local community. There is a huge amount of support available from other volunteers, leaders, and staff, which makes it a very welcoming environment to get involved in. There are ​lots of opportunities for personal development, leadership and teamwork skills to training and new experiences. Importantly, it’s genuinely fun and you can make a positive difference in the lives of young people!
