Volunteer Week: Sue
This Volunteer Week, we’re shining a light on some of our amazing volunteers and why they do what they do!
What roles do you have with Girlguiding Edinburgh?
I am a Guide Leader and have recently also become a Rainbow Leader. I am also the Braid Division Commissioner. In the past I have also been Fairmilehead District Commissioner, Braid Camp Adviser, Braid BP Link and County Guide Adviser.
How long have you been volunteering with Girlguiding?
I have been volunteering for more than 21 years.
What is a favourite memory you have from volunteering with Girlguiding Edinburgh?
Difficult one as I have had so many wonderful experiences! I think the top one has to be being at the helm of the tall ship, Lord Nelson, sailing up the Clyde in the Girlguiding Centenary year. Going on a tall ship was something I would never have done if not part of Girlguiding. Oh, just remembered another one – being INSIDE the gates of Buckingham Palace watching the changing of the guard while on a trip to London with Fairmilehead Rangers!
Why do you volunteer?
It is FUN! I have made lots of good friends, had some amazing experiences, learnt new skills and feel that I am giving back to an organisation which helped me get to where I did. Putting GG on a cv/university application opens doors. I love seeing the girls flourish. I love watching quiet 10 year old girls grow and develop and become confident young woman running unit meetings as young leaders or as leaders themselves.
Why should others get involved in volunteering with Girlguiding Edinburgh?
For all of the above reasons. Also, with more volunteers we could expand and open more units, thus giving opportunities to more girls.
