Volunteers’ Week 2026: Isla
Isla – Leader
I’m Isla, I’ve been a leader with Girlguiding Edinburgh for four months after recently finishing my Leadership Development Programme (LDP).
I volunteer because I want to provide a welcoming and safe place where girls feel comfortable to express themselves and take part in a wide range of opportunities. And to give back to the units I grew up in and to spread my passion of Guiding through others.

Isla recently became a leader after spending most of her life in Guiding.
I remember when I was a brownie and one night i said to myself ‘I want to be a leader’. And it was because I saw all my leaders and young leaders working together to run the activities and create fun memories for all of us and my enjoyment for Guiding grew. I have made many amazing friends through my time in Guiding so far, all the way from rainbows to being a leader.
It’s really difficult to choose a favourite memory of my time in Guiding as I have done so many brilliant things. But one thing that stands out was volunteering in the service team at the county camp last year, Festival 25 – I enjoyed this new challenge. This helped me to improve my ability working with others and meet new people from across Edinburgh and further afield. I enjoyed volunteering at the event and watching everyone enjoy themselves.
I recommend volunteering in Girlguiding to others because it is a fun and welcoming environment. You’ll be supported with your journey in Guiding wether it’s as a leader or unit/district helper, and make long lasting memories.
